Who are we?

Earth Within Girls (EWG) was founded in 2020 and works to inspire adolescent girls and women to connect their internal cycles to the natural environment by providing accessible, prevention-based hormonal literacy tools so they can thrive. Most girls and women are only provided with cursory understanding of their bodies, hormonal health and menstrual cycles.

Why Earth Within Girls?

We envision a future where girls are confident and equipped to navigate the challenges of adolescence and become stewards of their hormonal health as they age. Through after-school programs, summer camps, and workshops, we use plant wisdom and self-care practices to build confidence, creativity, and resilience in a safe and inclusive space. We approach our cycle education by using nature as a model.

Diversity and Inclusion

We value inclusivity and diversity in all of our programs, and take offering a safe space for all of our participants very seriously. We welcome members of the BIPOC community and female identifying and non-binary individuals into our workshops and classes. Additionally, we facilitate a safe space for those that may not have a period as we all embody the unique natural cycles that women and girls experience outside of menstruation.

Melissa Lafontaine

Our Story

Earth Within Girls (EWG) started as an extension of Board President Melissa Lafontaine’s MA in Environmental Studies: ‘Cultivating Earth Centered Children through Plant-Based Education’ at the University of Montana. She has been dedicated to the wonders of plants and children as both have been her greatest teachers of simplicity and joy. Melissa is the owner of a sustainable floral design business, Earth Within Flowers. EWG was originally part of Earth Within Flower’s DIY community workshop series and was inspired from Melissa’s personal journey in healing her imbalanced hormonal cycle through plant knowledge and self-care.

The first official guardian-daughter workshop, held around ‘International Women’s Day’, brought media attention and was published on the front page of ‘The Missoulian’. While Melissa observed many caretakers bring their daughters to take part she found there was a deep desire for more of her content, knowledge, and programming. As the success of the series grew, schools began reaching out to incorporate her work into their after-school programs and curriculum. From there, EWG was born and the work continues to foster community wellness, resiliency, environmental sustainability, and the empowerment of young girls.
